Analysis of Film Openings

Catch Me If You Can

This film opening gives us an introduction to the story and characters in the film. We can gather, from the animation, that there is some sort of chase going on. This fits it in to the action genre.

The chase seems to be between two men, suggesting that they are the two main characters. At 1:05 we see the image of a woman, suggesting that there is maybe another key character, who could perhaps be the love interest, signified by the change in music at this point.

Because of the uniforms and the change in identities, it suggests that the men are spies/ secret agents, which sets up an idea of the story for the audience.

The setting changes through out, as the characters identities change. It seems to take place in various countries, because of the airplanes that the characters are seen to be getting out of. The main setting, though, seems to be New York. This is signified by the use of icons such as the yellow taxi.

The sound is very mysterious, with fits well with the secret agent and secret identity theme and sets up a mysterious atmosphere which will most likely be present throughout most of the film.

The titles are integrated in to the opening sequence. They are often used as part of the animation, for example, Christopher Walken's name becomes part of the road in New York and part of the film title becomes a cloud in the sky, as the airplane passes through it. Also, the titles are put in at specific points in order to she which of the characters in the animation will be later on played by each actor, such as Leonardo Dicaprio's name becomes an airport sign, pointing to his characters, Tom Hank's name becomes seats as his character sits below another sign, pointing to his character and Amy Adams' name become a pool ladder beside her character.

My Best Friends Wedding

The use of wedding/bridesmaids dresses suggests that this film will be romantic, but also the surreal narrative of the opening adds some comedy, which makes it almost certainly in the romantic comedy genre.

The narrative is clearly going to be about a wedding, because of the uses of characters such as a bride and bridesmaids, singing about how to keep your man. We can tell that there will almost definitely be a character of a groom in the film as well. The opening also lends the film to being a comedy due to the irony of the bride character catching her own bouquet, which also suggests that something will go wrong in the storyline.

The opening creates themes of weddings, love and comedy. It uses iconography such as a dress, bouquet and ring to signify marriage.

The sound is very upbeat. creating a happy mood and is quite old fashioned in the way in which the lyrics are about how to keep your man, which all sets the themes and atmosphere of the film.

The titles are integrated in to the opening. They are written like calligraphy, which carries the old fashioned theme and also has connotations of a wedding invitation.

Lord of War

The imagery of bullets instantly tells the audience that this is going to be an action film. It leans itself to maybe be about war, which could also put it in the political genre.

the narrative tells the life of a bullet, as you follow it all the way from being made in the factory to being loaded in a gun and then eventually shooting someone. During it's journey, it travels to many places, along with many cases of thousands of other bullets, suggesting that they are needed for a war (setting the theme)

The use of bullets instantly gives connotations of death and pain, which are most likely themes throughout the film.

The setting starts off a factory and then a lot of travelling takes place,. It then becomes very clear that they've travelled to a different country.

The sound used is relevant, due to the lyrics, relating to war, but the upbeat and happy tone it has acts as a juxtaposition to the dark and serious themes of war.

The tit;es are not integrated in this clip. they are in a very formal font and sometimes hardly noticeable.

Panic Room

This opening doesn't really have a narrative. All we can get from it is that it takes place in a city (New York from the buildings shown), which suggests that it is probably an action film.

However, the eerie and tense atmosphere created by the sound could suggest that it is maybe a thriller.

It is set in a city, so the themes could be something to do with city life and the characters are more than likely going to be city people.

The sinister sound changes to start ticking as after the title appears, suggesting that time (or lack of it) is a key theme in the film.
the titles are integrated in to the scenery, which makes them interesting, but sometimes not incredibly visible.
