A romantic comedy is a sub-genre of both Romance and Comedy. They are light-hearted, humorous dramatic stories centred around romantic ideals such as a "true love" able to overcome all obstacles.
They usually follow the a basic plot, where a man and a woman become romantically involved, but face many obstacle before they get to that point. They usually don't even realise that they like each other, but the writers leave clues throughout the film which suggest that they will end up together.
There are generally 6 types of romantic comedy:
Secrets & Lies, where the hero is lying to, or withholding information about, someone. Such as an affair.
e.g You've got Mail
The Impostor, where the hero is pretending to be someone he’s not
e.g Maid in Manhattan
The Magic Spell, where some fantastic wish, curse, power, after death experience or mythical creature changes the hero’s life and they who fall in love while combating its effects.
e.g 13 Going on 30
Peter Pan & Wendy, where the men are stuck in emotional adolescence and must learn to take responsibility in order to win the love of more mature women.
e.g The 40 Year Old Virgin
Slumming, where there is conflict which stems from class differences.
e.g Notting Hill
The Long Haul , where conflict may come from some unusual situation, but these tend to cover longer spans of time, as the characters weather the ups and downs of more ongoing relationships.
e.g 500 Days of Summer
Learning these different types of comedy will help me and my group to choose what type of romantic comedy we want to create, so we can focus on one type and make sure it fits all the requirements so that it is a successful romantic comedy film.
